Today, the sitting president is going to Mt. Rushmore for a speech and a big fireworks display. [N.B.: Mt. Rushmore has not had a fireworks display since 2009 due to the severe fire danger in the area.]
I suspect that among the crowd (who will attend without social distancing and no mask requirements) there will probably NOT be many natives of the area like the Lakota. In nearby Custer, SD, however, there will be no end of pro-Trump shirts for sale as we saw last year, so his supporters will be sporting their colors.
During the week, the sitting president made the following statements:
“We have a heritage, we have a history. We should learn from the history. And if you don’t understand your history, you’ll go back to it again. You will go right back to it. You have to learn. Think of it—take away that whole era, and you’ll go back to it sometime—people won’t know about it.”
“I think we’re gonna be very good with the coronavirus. I think that at some point that’s going to sort of just disappear, I hope.”
