“I wanna be a big boom guy
Oh-hey-oh
I wanna be a big boom guy
Oh-hey-oh
I’ve got a job and I’ve got a pension
I’ve got a twenty foot extension
I wanna be a big boom guy
Oh-hey-oh”

“Booth, the Musical” by Omero and Spina)

Roger Ebert once related that while Orson Welles was surveying the RKO back lot in Hollywood, the legendary wunderkind was to have observed, “This is the biggest electric train set a boy ever had!”
Imagine being a young boy or girl accompanying mom or dad to work, and that work being ShowBiz.
Shawnee was a co-star on our series and she would regularly bring her daughter and two boys along. When we were on break, the young folks were allowed (with supervision) to roam the sets and explore the marvels of the business with wide-eyed wonder. Among the many things I love in this frame is that it is not just Mom who has her son’s back. Butch, the boom op, and Chris (aka “The Commander”), were also there to lend a helping hand — and Butch was even able to give a few lessons on the art of operating his sound boom. That young man is nearly a decade older now — I wonder if he still has his eyes on production? (By the way, his older brother got his turn at the helm, too!)
