“I’m An Old Cowhand from the Rio Grande
And I learned to ride ‘fore I learned to stand.
I’m a riding fool who is up to date
I know every trail in the Lone Star State
Cause I ride the range in a Ford V-8
Yippie yi yo ki-yay.”
Working with Barry Corbin was an absolute pleasure — and he is the real deal, a Texas-born cowboy through and through. One day, he asked a favor of the producer, to borrow a little set time to record the voiceovers for three tributes to actors with whom he had worked (and, sadly, had all passed on) and were about to be inducted into the Oklahoma Cowboy Hall of Fame. The three men were Rory Calhoun, Harry “Dobie” Carey Jr., and Ernest Borgnine. Not everyone was as familiar with the works of these three as was I — and I still learned a lot from what Barry had to say both in the copy and from personal stories he shared with us.
Though we were given a break to do with as we pleased, almost no one left the stage. Barry gave these tributes with such reverence and respect, in that distinctive and distinguished twang of his, that you really couldn’t tell which of them he knew well, and which he did not. (For the record, Dobie and Ernie were friends – Calhoun, he had just worked with).
Barry’s no dude — this man is a cowboy!
